Impacted Teeth

What are impacted teeth?

An impacted tooth occurs when the tooth doesn't break through the gums. You can also have a partially impacted tooth, where part of the tooth breaks through, but the rest remains below the gum’s surface.

Unless an impacted tooth causes you issues, often the only way you'll know there is an issue is when it's picked up during a routine dental X-ray. Impacted teeth are especially problematic because they're hard to clean, making them prone to tooth decay and gum disease.

Dr. Touni assesses the severity of your impacted tooth and creates a custom treatment plan appropriate to your needs.

Why are impacted teeth a problem?

If ignored, an impacted tooth can lead to further dental complications, including:

  • Premature wear-and-tear
  • Asymmetric alignment
  • Poor tooth function
  • Sinus cavity issues
  • Damage to the adjacent teeth
  • Improper spacing

If you think you may have an impacted tooth, schedule an appointment with Dr. Touni and he can provide a thorough examination.

What are the symptoms of impacted teeth?

You can have an impacted tooth and experience no symptoms at all. But, if the tooth has started to cause other issues, you'll typically notice the following:

  • Bleeding, swollen, or tender gums
  • Jaw pain
  • Difficulty opening your mouth
  • An unpleasant taste
  • Bad breath

These symptoms are all signs of dental complications, and you shouldn't ignore them. If you notice any of these signs, contact Touni Orthodontics for treatment.

What causes impacted teeth?

A tooth becomes impacted when it doesn't have enough room to emerge, which is why wisdom teeth are the most commonly affected — they erupt after your other teeth have already done so.

While you can't prevent a tooth from becoming impacted, scheduling regular dental checkups with Dr. Touni allows him to monitor the tooth's development and take early action if necessary.

What's the treatment for impacted teeth?

Treatment for an impacted tooth varies depending on the tooth affected and the issues it's causing. Dr. Touni has several ways to approach it, including removing the tooth entirely or using eruption aids to encourage the tooth to break the surface.

Dr. Touni uses state-of-the-art sanitization technology to ensure your safety and well-being, such as the Safe-Flo™ saliva ejector, the Sterisil® Straw V2, and the Mocom Sterilizer — B Futura. Call Touni Orthodontics today, or make an appointment online.
